This joint permits the jaw to move up and down, side to side, chew and yawn. Inflammation or tenderness of this joint may lead to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) or Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD).
Pain associated with the TMJ is usually self – diagnosable and maybe chronic or acute in nature depending upon the intensity or duration of pain.
Pain may radiate around the ear, jaw, mouth and head giving rise to facial pain.
